Featured event area

It would be nice if there was a place on the main page for a featured event, with a space big enough for a graphic. This would be good for community events, such as library activities or festivals.

Thanks Nancy - that's a great idea, and one of the focus areas for this site (businesses and events).

The 'Featured' profile in each category is just a display portlet, although I noticed we don't yet have one
in the Events category. I hope to include that when I upgrade to the next point release of ConcourseConnect.

Once the featured event portlet works on its own category page, I'll add it to the main page as you suggested. The selection of what's featured is still somewhat random, but it will include a thumbnail of the primary photo for that profile.

We now have a 'Featured Event' display portlet in the Events category, but not currently on the home page.

Featured profiles in each category are mostly random, but only draw from their own top-level category (Businesses, Organizations, Groups etc.). There's a featured profile in each category.

The home page is a little different. There we need to strike a balance determined by the site focus, which is regional business and tourism promotion including events, plus social interaction.

The 'Upcoming Events' display portlet currently used on the home page displays not just top-level events, but also calendar entries from individual profiles. The 'Featured Events' portlet only draws from top-level events.

I think at some point we can have both on the home page, but that might wait until we see what grows.

I still don't see how to add a featured event. I have a nice graphic for the Armed forces Day Concert, May 15, that would be nice to add. - Nancy

The 'Featured <category>' function randomly selects a profile from the selected category, so there's no way to add or mark an event as featured. Another issue is that there's currently no logic to specify only future events, so a Featured Event display would also randomly display old events.

I though that might be confusing to site visitors, or at least disappointing to click on an event from last season; however I'd be happy to add that back to the Events page if you think it would help.

Why use Discussions?

The Discussion area is a great place for networking, getting advice, sharing an opinion or answering questions.

The site is populated with topics, within forums, that help visitors ask questions or make comments in an organized manner. Anyone can ask questions or share insights and views. Not only can you answer questions, but this area allows others to answer or comment.
